The Soul’s Pre-birth Agreement: Do you believe

Dear Friend,

Around the dinner table, my family and I enjoy discussing folktales, myths, and mind-blowing quotes to stimulate a different way of thinking. Or rather, my family listens to me responding with occasional comments “interesting”, “uh-huh”, a wink, and a nod to each other finding it all amusing. The tale that stimulates active conversation around our dinner table, is the “Pre-birth Agreement made by our Souls”. I share with my family one evening this tale that can be found in different cultures around the world, written in slightly different ways and memorialized in Greek Mythology.

Soul's Pre-birth Agreement Tale:

Soul's Pre-birth Agreement
Every soul has a purpose, a genius, a calling. Prior to our birth, our souls make a Sacred Contract with our 3 angels regarding our fate and other souls we will meet. This Sacred Contract is meant to support and challenge us and guide us to our soul’s purpose. Our minds are made to forget this Contract when we descend on earth.
However, the Soul remembers.

From the time of youth, till our death, we do our best to live and discover that which we have forgotten; our true selves, our calling. Our Souls engage in a journey and will encounter all sorts of situations. Not knowing who we are, we are born into circumstances – parents, family, culture, and society. We meet other souls along the way- siblings, friends, partners, coworkers, and strangers and so on. Meeting with other souls we teach each other lessons through our fated circumstances. We will fumble, succeed, experience shame, hubris, wounds, fear and so on.

God, compassionate to human frailties, creates and weaves a thread of patterns coded with behaviors and emotions, attaching it to the soul. These patterns are paradoxical to each other and are meant to challenge and assist us in reaching enlightenment. Our soul calls us to respond true to our soul’s essence, one which we do not remember. When we move too far away from our soul, the thread gets knotted and then unravels. Staying near the soul, the thread tugs us further in, to touch the soul. Feeling a sense of remembrance, we are strengthened and empowered. Our choices have consequences that either builds or splinters our character. The challenge for many of us, “will you hear the soul’s calling? At the end of your life, will you have remembered who you are and lived out your Sacred Contract?” Silence….

The Discussion

“See, it’s not my fault! It’s not my fault! My angel made me forget where I placed my car keys!”
-My daughter
Thunderous laughter erupts between my daughter and husband which is not what I anticipate! Wide eye wonder is instead met with laughter at my expense, coloring my face red.

“I wonder if my angels can guide me to beat the boss in the Zelda games?” – My husband

The infectious giggling affects my son as he sputters water while drinking. As hard as I try to purse my lips to prevent from laughing, the levity of the moment breathes in fresh air tickling my sides forcing my lips into a smile and then into full blown laughter.

Regardless whether you believe in this story or not, it is meant to be understood symbolically which my family soon appreciates in this form. Yes, I am one of those people who believe in guides and guardian angels. I suspect, I’m not alone. But the notion of meeting with angels to determine certain fate for life lessons, is hotly debated. My son choosing to be autistic or a family member agreeing to be inflicted with trauma is too hard for me to stomach, but I do understand the gist of this Pre-birth agreement.

Our soul calls us to be authentic and real.

Here’s some takeaways:
  • There’s a higher power at work, something Divine that we may never fully understand but requires us to trust, live, reflect and take account of ourselves.
  • Our soul calls us to be authentic and real.
  • Questions to ask yourself, “Do I live my life and acknowledge things as they are, find graces along my journey or simply feel my fate and remain hopeless? What part do I play in my struggle and in my suffering? Will I choose to do better?”

My family’s laughter fills me with humility and happiness, despite it being at my expense. Our family’s fate in the autism journey is destined to be lived with Graces of each moment. For now, Grace fills us with joy and connection. I wish the same for you.

Thank you for the read!
